About Big Basket

Unlisted Shares (Supermarket Grocery Supplies Pvt Ltd) BigBasket is India's oldest organised online grocery platform and today operates under Tata Digital. What began as a scheduled grocery delivery service has since evolved into a hybrid retail business that spans planned grocery deliveries, quick commerce through BB Now, fresh fruits and vegetables, FMCG and household essentials, gourmet and premium foods, and a growing set of integrations with the wider Tata ecosystem, including pharmacy and Tata Neu. The business runs through two principal legal entities. Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited (IRCPL) houses the customer-facing retail operations, while Supermarket Grocery Supplies Private Limited (SGSPL) handles procurement, warehousing and the broader supply chain. Both companies sit under Tata Digital, with effective Tata Group ownership of 84.23%. Business Model Unlike pure marketplace platforms, BigBasket follows an inventory-led, or first-party, retail model. It owns the goods it sells, which gives it tighter control over quality, pricing and availability, but also means it carries the working-capital and inventory risk that marketplaces avoid. The chain begins with procurement. BigBasket buys directly from FMCG companies, farmers, local vendors, brand owners and importers, a function largely executed through Supermarket Grocery Supplies. These goods then move into the company's storage network, which comprises regional fulfilment centres, distribution hubs and, for the quick-commerce business, a growing footprint of dark stores placed close to demand clusters. Customers place orders across three front ends: the BigBasket app, the website, and the Tata Neu app. Fulfilment then happens either through traditional scheduled delivery slots, through BB Now for instant delivery, or via the hyperlocal delivery network that sits between the two. Revenue Model The bulk of BigBasket's revenue comes from the outright sale of grocery products. Staples, fruits and vegetables, dairy, packaged foods, personal care, home care and gourmet items together form the company's largest and most stable income stream. Layered on top of this is the private-label portfolio, which includes brands such as Fresho, bb Royal, bb Popular and Tasties. These in-house labels typically carry higher gross margins than third-party brands and are therefore an important lever for improving unit economics. Quick commerce, delivered under the BB Now banner, is the fastest-moving part of the business. Customers effectively pay for immediacy and convenience, and the format tends to drive higher purchase frequency. This is the segment BigBasket is currently scaling most aggressively. Advertising and brand promotions represent a smaller but structurally attractive stream. Consumer brands pay for sponsored listings, homepage visibility, search placement and promotional campaigns, and because this revenue carries very little incremental cost, it flows through at high margin. Finally, the company earns from memberships and subscriptions, which offer free deliveries, faster delivery windows and other customer benefits. The FY26 report does not disclose subscription revenue separately, so its contribution cannot be sized from published figures. FY26 Business Performance Customer-facing retail: Innovative Retail Concepts Private Limited The retail entity recorded a turnover of ₹8,223.09 crore in FY26 and posted a loss after tax of ₹3,073.12 crore. Its balance sheet showed total assets of ₹4,215.41 crore against total liabilities of ₹10,404.79 crore, leaving a negative net worth of ₹6,189.37 crore. Supply chain: Supermarket Grocery Supplies Private Limited The supply-chain entity reported a turnover of ₹2,298.24 crore and a comparatively modest loss of ₹101.69 crore. It held total assets of ₹4,744.09 crore against liabilities of just ₹361.10 crore, giving it a positive net worth of ₹4,382.99 crore. It is worth stressing that these are standalone figures for two separate legal entities. They should not be added together to arrive at a consolidated revenue number for BigBasket, since inter-company transactions between the two would need to be eliminated first. Reading the FY26 Numbers On revenue, the retail business grew its turnover to roughly ₹8,223 crore, while the supply-chain arm contributed about ₹2,298 crore at the entity level. Profitability is where the strain shows. The retail entity's ₹3,073 crore loss is significantly wider than the previous year, which points to a heavy investment cycle tied to the quick-commerce transition: dark-store rollouts, denser delivery capacity and, in all likelihood, sharper customer acquisition spending. The supply-chain entity's ₹102 crore loss is comparatively contained. The financial position mirrors this split. The retail business is carrying a negative net worth of ₹6,189 crore, with liabilities substantially exceeding assets, a position sustained by continued parent-level funding. The supply-chain entity, by contrast, remains solidly capitalised with a positive net worth of ₹4,383 crore. Tata Sons' Commentary The FY26 annual report acknowledges that India's e-commerce landscape has shifted rapidly towards quick commerce, that BigBasket is adapting its operating model to this structural change, and that Tata Digital continues to invest in strengthening its digital commerce ecosystem. Strengths and Pressure Points BigBasket's advantages are real. It has the backing of the Tata ecosystem, a nationwide grocery network built over more than a decade, a large and established customer base, a well-developed private-label portfolio, deep procurement capability, and distribution reach extended through Tata Neu. The pressures are equally clear. Operating losses are heavy and profitability remains weak. The company moved to quick commerce later than its rivals and is now competing against Blinkit, Zepto and Instamart, all of which built dark-store density earlier. Closing that gap requires susta
